《동화마중》을 마중하며

현재 우리나라에는 ‘한국동시문학회’가 370여 명의 회원으로 조직되어 있고, 《동시마중》, 《동시발전소》, 《동시먹는 달팽이》 등 동시 전문 계간지가 충주, 대구, 청주 등에서 발행되고 있지만 한국동화문학회는 만들어지지 않고, 동화전문지도 발간되지 않고 있다. 부산에서 동화작가 정진채 선생이 1990년 여름호부터 1997년까지 《동화문학》을 계간으로 발행한 것이 전부다.
이런 상황에서 지난해 3월 28일 《동화마중》이 반연간지로 전북 전주에서 탄생했다. 발행처는 ‘동화창작연구소’, 발행 및 편집인은 김자연 선생이다.

김자연 선생은 1985년 《아동문학평론》 신인문학상에 동화가 당선되고, 2000년 한국일보 신춘문예에 동화가 당선된 동화작가로 동화집 『항아리의 노래』, 『개똥할멈과 고루고루밥』, 『초코파이』 그림책 『우리 집에 놀러와』, 『수상한 김치똥』 동시집 『감기 걸린 하늘』, 『피자의 힘』 이론서 『한국동화문학연구』,『아동문학 이해와 창작의 실제』, 『유혹하는 동화 쓰기』 등을 펴냈으며 전북아동문학상, 방정환문학상을 받았다.
선생은 1997년 백제예술대학에 아동문학창작강의가 개설되면서부터 동화강의를 하고 전주대학교, 원광대학교, 단국대학교에서도 동화를 강의하면서 더 많은 사람이 동화와 함께 행복해지기를 소망하며 2003년 전주대학교 평생교육원에 동화쓰기반을 개설했다. 2010년 동화창작연구소 문을 열고, 2015년에 동화아카데미교실을 만들면서 분기별로 문집을 내기 시작해 2021년 상반기에 14집을 낸 것이 《동화마중》의 마중물이 되었다.
창간호 ‘여는 글’에서 선생은 아이들의 올바른 문화는 어른들의 정서와 선택에서 결정된다고 보면서 동심을 회복하는 것은 참다운 나를 찾는 과정이며, 어른들이 동화를 마중하는 일은 그만큼 우리 아이들에게 선한 영향을 줄 수 있으리라 믿으며, 《동화마중》과 함께 동화로 하루에 한 1번 웃고, 한 달에 2권 읽고, 한 해에 3번 동화를 쓰는 ‘123 동화사랑’ 운동을 펼칠 것이라 했다.
 
↑↑ 동화마중 창간호ⓒ 고성신문  창간호에서는 동화아카데미교실 회원들 작품이 주를 이루었지만 지난 4월 25일에 발행딘 통권 2호에서는 회원과 지역을 벗어나 전국의 동화작가들 작품을 수록하면서 특집도 꾸미고 초대작가의 대표작을 실으면서 신인문학상 당선작품도 실었다.
요즘 동화는 단편보다는 장편동화, 판타지동화보다는 생활동화로 흐르고 있다. 전적으로 작품을 담을 그릇이 부족하기 때문이다. 동화전문지 하나 없는 현실에 출판사들도 순수보다는 상업 쪽으로 유혹하고 있다. ‘아름다운 동화’보다는 ‘잘 팔리는 동화책’을 꿈꾸고 있기 때문이다. 은연중에 작가들도 ‘잘 팔리는 책’을 함께 꿈꾸며 출판사와 동맹 내지 합작을 시도하고 있는 것이다. 그래서 ‘아름다운 동화’는 갈 길을 잃고, 동화작가들의 마음에서도 멀어지고 있는 것이다.
동화전문지의 탄생은 단편동화가 사라져가는 쇠락한 동화나라에 새 깃발을 꽂는 일이나 다름없다. 《동시마중》, 《동시발전소》, 《동시먹는 달팽이》 등 동시전문 계간지가 충주, 대구, 청주에서 탄생했듯, 전주에서 탄생한 《동화마중》이 우리나라 동화문학을 꽃피우는 마중물이 되길 소망해 본다.
‘잘 팔리는 책’보다 ‘자기 작품’ 한 편을 쓰기 위해 날밤 새는 동화작가들이 보석이듯 들고 와 발표하는 ‘빛나는 그릇’이 되길 소망해 본다. 새롭게 꽂은 《동화마중》 깃발이 아름다운 동화나라의 상징이 되길 소망해 본다.

김자연 선생은 동화작가이면서 아동문학평론가로서도 입지를 굳히고 있다. ‘동화를 마중하며 나를 사랑하고 세상을 껴안자’고 선생이 두 번째 《동화마중》 ‘여는 글’에서 밝혔듯이 ‘화려한 이력이나 문학 장르에 제한을 두지 않고 좋은 동화를 썼다면 발표의 기회를 주는’ 일에 ‘서두르지 않고 뚜벅뚜벅 걸어가는’ 모습을 오래오래 지켜보며 그 걸음이 계속될 동안 오래오래 박수를 보내고 싶다.
《동화마중》은 4월과 10월에 발행되며 김자연 선생은 《열린아동문학》 가을호에 ‘이 계절의 동화나무’로 소개되어 동동숲의 한 그루 나무가 된다.
